Tuition & Fees

Please see below the cost estimates for one year at CBU. All amounts are listed in Canadian Dollars ($CAD), and are subject to change.

• For a Nova Scotia resident entering university direct from high school and taking ten undergraduate-level courses per academic year (30 credits):
  • Tuition: $7,501.00
  • Fees: $1,027.90
    • Total: $8,528.90

For the 2022/2023 academic year, Nova Scotia students studying at CBU will automatically qualify to receive a bursary from the Province of Nova Scotia to be applied against tuition in the amount of $128.30 per three credit course. If a student withdraws from a course, the bursary is reversed in accordance with CBU “Class Withdrawal and Financial Refunds” policy. The above quoted tuition fees reflects this bursary. For example: Student registers for one three credit course, tuition charge is $878.40-$128.30=$750.10 balance owed by student.

Nova Scotia students who formerly lived in foster care for minimum one year are eligible to receive a 100% tuition waiver towards their first certificate, diploma or degree. Students must first be accepted by CBU to qualify for this tuition waiver. Please review full eligibility and application requirements for more details.

• For a Canadian citizen or landed resident taking ten undergraduate-level courses per academic year (30 credits):
  • Tuition: $8,784.00
  • Fees: $1,027.90
    • Total: $9,811.90
      

• For an International student taking ten undergraduate-level courses per academic year (30 credits):
  • Tuition: $8,784.00
  • International differential fees: $8,784.00
  • International medical plan (student with MSI): $620.00
  • International medical plan (student without MSI): $1,283.00
  • Fees: $727.90
    • Total: $18,915.90 – 19,578.90

Disclosure Regarding SIN Collection

In 2018, the Federal Government of Canada introduced a new requirement for all designated educational institutions in Canada. To adhere to that requirement, CBU must now collect all student Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) for government reporting purposes. For more information, visit CBU.ca/SIN or click the button below.

Health and Dental Plans

Domestic Students

By referendum, all full-time students (except international students) are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Plan and Student Dental Plan. The fee for the Health Plan is $175.00 and the fee for the Dental Plan is $120.00, both of these fees are payable at the time of registration.

The coverage runs from September 1 to August 31. Family rates are available and part-time students may opt into these plans.

If proof of alternative comparable coverage (through parents, spouse, or employer) is presented to the Students’ Union, a student may opt out of each plan and the fee will be removed from their account. The deadline to complete this process is September 30. The opt-out procedure is an annual one and therefore must be done each year. The opt-out form can be completed on your student portal. These fees are non-refundable after September 30.

International Students

All international students must, as a requirement of registration, enrol in the University International Health Plan. For more information on health and dental plans please see here.

Before you begin at CBU, you should take some time to familiarize yourself with our financial regulations. Payment of fees or arrangements to pay fees must be made in accordance with CBU’s policy. It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the CBU’s regulations pertaining to financial matters.

Cape Breton University does not accept responsibility for any loss, damage, or interruption of classes, accommodation or meals suffered by any student as a result of circumstances beyond the reasonable control of the University. These circumstances include the suspension or termination of services by any group of University employees.
